Top 10 most memorable Hindi movie quotes
September 27th, 2005 by ArchanaKitne admi the – Sholay (1975)
In her well researched and immensely readable book on Sholay, Anupama Chopra says that the popularity of a movie can be assessed by the ad spoofs it inspires. From the time of its release in 1975, kitney aadmi the has churned out innumerable ads. So is Gabbar’s kitne admi the Hindi movie’s most memorable dialogue ever? Sholay was the first movie to bring out an audio of the film’s dialogues and the experiment was a raging success. The dialogues sold more than R D Burman’s compositions! From jo dar gaya samjho mar gaya to < karta drama ghari>and tumhara naam kya hai Basanti anyone who has seen the movie, has his own favourite dialogue.
Yeh bacchhon ke khelne ki cheez nahi, haath kat jaaye toh khoon nikal aata hai’ – Waqt (1965)
Directed by Yash Chopra and produced by B R Chopra, this multi-starer blockbuster established some of Hindi movies most recurrent and popular themes: brothers separated at birth, who keep meeting each other without realizing their kinship; one brother grows up virtuous, the other is on the wrong side of the law; rich girl falling in love with an idealistic poor man. Waqt also set the trend for all future Yash Chopra movies, with opulent houses, lush manicured lawns, ladies dressed prettily in chiffon and designer churidars, flashy big cars and song sequences in the verdant valleys of Kashmir (which later shifted to Switzerland).
Babumoshai…! – Anand (1970)
Rajesh Khanna was already a superstar when he co-starred with the gangly Amitabh who looked quite uncharismatic next to the effervescent charmer. Rajesh Khanna’s babumoshai was replete with affection, warmth and had a teasing note to it. It wasn’t an artificially contrived Bengali mannerism like Bhansali’s bondhu or shotti from Devdas. The same playfully affectionate address takes on profoundly tragic overtones when Rajesh Khanna’s recorded message tries to comfort his friend Amitabh, as Amitabh weeps over the death of his patient (Rajesh Khanna), who had also become his closest friend
Aap ke paon dekhe, bahut haseen hai. Inhe zameen par mat utariyega — maile ho jayenge – Pakeezah (1972)
Raj Kumar’s gravelly rendition of this immortal sentence has become synonymous with classic romance and chivalry. It was delivered as a ‘voice over’ through a letter that Meena Kumari discovers left on her train berth. The irony is of course that the courtesan Sahibjaan (Meena Kumari) earns her living through mujras, where she has to get her feet dirty, enticing men with her dance. The train’s piercing whistle recurs as a leitmotif throughout the movie, reminding her of her secret admirer and holds out the promise of a better life, away from men who purchase her beauty at the kotha.
Mujhse dosti karoge? Bobby (1973)
Dimple puts out her hand and asks Rishi mujhse dosti karoge? Seems like a simple request but it created cinematic history of sorts. Never before had a girl been so forward as to make the first move. That too with a handshake. It was unheard of, since Hindi film heroines normally simpered and shied away from any bodily contact until the man had wooed her. In a short skirt and with a wide-eyed quizzical _expression, Bobby (Dimple), is unabashed youthfulness and sexiness personified. The line also became the most hackneyed ice-breaker in college campuses all over the country.
Mere pas ma hai – Deewar (1975)
Nirupama Roy, the quintessential long suffering, patient and gentle ‘ma’ in innumerable Hindi movies, became immortalized as the ‘ma’ whom Amitabh could not win over with his gari, bari and bungalow. That single stark sentence was brilliantly juxtaposed against Amitabh’s rantings about his material possessions. Mere pas ma hai summed up the entire gamut of moral issues that were at stake in the movie. Ponderous generalizations such as ‘crime does not pay’, ‘money cannot buy love’ and ‘the end does not justify the means’ were put across succinctly and simply through this single sentence. Another classic quote from the Salim – Javed duo.
Mogambo khush hua – Mr. India (1987)
Amrish Puri could never live down his Mogambo image (his evil priest role in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was simply another exaggerated and more grotesque Mogambo). Mogambo khush hua was eccentric evil incarnate, in colourful Bollywood hyperbole. He wore outlandish clothes, made his eyes as big as saucers, threatened hapless victims into submission and then chortled out loud Mogambo khush hua.
Children loved him because he seemed a caricature straight out of a comic strip.
Dosti mein no sorry, no thank you – Maine Pyar Kiya (1988)
Saccharine…but teenagers loved this new definition of friendship. Friendship badges and stickers became a rage in schools, which was in itself, a completely new phenomenon in India (to be revived as friendship bands after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai hit the screen in 2003). “Love means never having to say you are sorry”, from Love Story was the inspiration for this dialogue. The theme of friendship between a girl and a boy is juxtaposed against the cynical view ek ladka aur ek ladki kabhi dost nahin ban sakte, questioning the innocence and purity of their relationship.
Mein chota sa, pyara sa, nanha sa, baccha hoon – Chaalbaaz (1989)
One of Shakti Kapoor’s first comic roles in striped knee length drawers with the drawer string hanging out, which went on to become a staple character in David Dhawan movies. By this time Shakti Kapoor had exhausted his range of villainous expressions. He tried his hand at comedy and proved to be a huge success. Ever since then, he has been repeating this dialogue in umpteen shows and TV interviews. And why did he say he was a baccha? Because he thought Sridevi wanted to seduce him, when in reality, she wanted to beat the living daylights out of him!
Bade bade deshon mein, aisi choti choti baatein hoti rahti hain - Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995)
Youngsters picked this line up and used it whenever they had to justify a meaningless, random act. It was thought to be ‘cool’ and witty. Shah Rukh Khan of course epitomized the cool dude. That he was a second generation Indian, settled abroad increased his appeal to all aspiring yuppies back in India! The comment was quintessential Raj – the carefree, rich, mischievous, but heart-in-the-right-place, lover boy who wooed Kajol and millions of girls in India and abroad with his mandolin in tujhe dekha to yeh jana sanam.

Yeah ! very true.
About Sholay :
Two thugs turned into a blessing for an entire remote village of India (Ramgarh ka do rupaya…ghoda agar ghass se’ dosti kar le` to khayega kya ?) - if the horse befriends the grass - what will it eat !? - such stray comments but a lot of depth in it.
In fact each dialogue of Sholay had a message for the mass.
I have written in details about sholay in www.commonwoman.net - a very well woven movie indeed.
A hope for the petty theives and also an indication on how Police officers could utilize thugs - its just a matter of appreciation and encouragement and a chance - a human being can transform into a divine being on this very earth !
About Anand :
Rajesh Khanna was ruling but he made way for the LION - Amitabh Bacchan and his no - nonsense attitude and his choice of women (in the movies ..also in real life - he selected Class in Jaya Bhadhuri ..among so many others)-
Amitabh’s dialogue delivery is typically Indian Male-ish - humourously sarcastic and giving you a dose ever so subtly !
About Bobby -
Dimple in bikini and the crass life style of the poor & the down trodden fishermen in India.
The kinds of attires that Dimple wore was definitely atrocious and scandalous - but it was a welcome surprise for the Indian Males I guess!! Also the fact that a rich fella like Rishi fell in love with her because of unloved childhood - brought up in a hostel - no family bonds - no ties - no culture - absolutely Nothing !
No wonder why that kind of fellow will not fall for a careless , bindass kind of a girl !

About Waqt :
This concept of a rich Lady falling in love with an idealistic poor eduacated man is basically the root of all the evils prevalent in the society methinks !!
This is something as the MBA’s suggest “Expectation Reduces Joy” - viewing such movies gives the men the idea that one day a rich and beautiful lass will fall in love with him ..and leaving aside her lush green garden and huuugggee bunglow - she will reconcile with the poor down trodden life style of man !
This rarely happens in real life - and when it does happen - hell breaks loose ! for both the parents (of the Rich partner esp.)!
Now this is Wrong - as when the man - expecting to marry a rich & beautiful girl finds out that he’ll have to compromise with an average looker - He fails to do so effectively - and the marriage just becomes a compromise.
Vice versa for the girls as well - a poor, illiterate - not so good looking girl - is made to think that if she is nice and meek and very shy and quiet - a rich & handsome Prince will come for her and she will live happily live ever after in riches and luxuries !!
These movie makers are surely great Motivators !! - they let the mass assume that “Diamonds never made a Lady, Lover or a friend” - but themselves are the ones who can take each other’s life for a diamond necklace !!
One must practice what one preaches - which the Follywood Directors seldom do !!
Infact they have done more harm than good ..well they have sometimes shown the truth (ref. movie Page 3) - and Truth Is very bitter indeed……

About Deewar :
Here Amitabh Bachan is shown as the true lover of his Mother - as when she was working as a Labourer - and was being ill- treated by the Contractor - He just could’nt stand it and became very hostile thereinafter ! This is the spirit that the Indian Freedom Fighters must have had I suppose when they did not even hesitate to give up thier lives for Mother India.
Whereas Shahsi Kapoor was shown as a typical parrot Indian - a bat - whoever was ruling - be it British or Indian - he will just carry on the duty…without using discretion !!
He was also born to the same Mother and had seen her harships but never thought of buying her the bulding that Amitabh bought for his Mother - shashi could not even afford a flat for his Mother - only talking BIG about duty & responsbility - in that way the Indian soldiers (during British rule) can also claim their dutiful-ness & obedience towards the British Empire and the fact that they fired point blank in the Jaliyaan wala baag episode !!- should they be appreciated for their obedience too ?
Anyways the Indian psychology has a tendency to justify itself - come what may ! - maybe thats why things move the way they move in India !

About Pakeeza :
A military mijaz / fighter/ galloping on horse kinda man falling in love with the well pedicured feet of a Courtesan !
Well these Cortesans have no work other than manicuring and pedicuring and doing facials and grooming themselves in order to stay awake all night entertaning clients - males born to frustrated , pervert and illiterate parents !
While I was working in Salora International - It just so happened that I was discussing about anti sun tan pack with my Lady colleague when one of the male colleagues (Dilip da) intervened and said that a particular area in Kolkata where the courtesans flourish…well sometimes these gilrs come out in the market place - their skins are like milk and honey !!glowing and beautiful ..then he further added that they spend their time at home and groom themselves all day long…for the night to come - whereas us girls - educated ones hang by the bus door and run in the sun - aadvertising a product or marketing etc….
so at the end of the game folks - who do you think enjoyed life the maximum ?
the ones in luxury and rich pleasures or the ones who live hand to mouth or our kind of people who were in the middle - hearing out the frustrations of both the categories - the very rich and the very poor !!

About Mr India
Mr Invisible , lover of the poor & the down trodden street orphan children!
The smash hit movie proves that the Indians are still very childish ! They have given up hope on mankind and expect a miracle - invisible man to come and redeem them !and who will bring about the miracle ? None other but a Scientist - by making a magic Watch !!One loop hole though - color RED cannot be fooled!!
Humourously made - a lady reporter (Sridevi) was specially amusing and this movie changed her life - as he changed her get-up - initially she used to come in silly Bhartiya Naari sacrifi-cial lady - but this movie was certainly refreshing.
Since majority of Indian public lead a very hypocritical life - and India is majorly occupied by street dwellers and refugees - the the movie had to be a smash hit as they are the ones who decide the fate of the..any and every movie !
The above is the reason I suppose why movies like Saath saath , jaane bhi do yaaron etc. could not make it big as the illiterates have meagre brains and do not understand intellect !
and same is the reason why the Item Girls rule as maximum males in India are frustrated…or have become so because of the ‘System’..?

About Chaalbaaz :
Remake of Sita aur Geeta released in the late 1970’s….enacted by yesteryear heroine Hema Malini. Showed the life style, culture and acceptance of tradition & ethics by the common mass in the 70’s era.
Chaalbaaz - made in late 1980’s - enacted by Sridevi - showed the cultural difference - major change !! - towards crass !!
The dress sense of Sridevi - her drunkard attitude, lying blatantly was much appreciated by the mass - shows that the Indian Common mass readily accepts the fact that girls can dress up like that, lie and show an attitude to anyone and everyone ! - could’nt careless attitude.
Thus speedily girls (in real life) started becoming chalbaaz - forgeting the fact that the Director of the movie showed that the drunkard Sridevi had a crass upbringing living with the slum dwellers - so grew up to be like that !
And on top of all this a rich fella meets her in the beer bar and falls in love with the drunkard !! - thus raising the expectancy level of the real life slum dweller girls !!
Life goes on in India…world !

About Dil Wale dulhania Le` Jayenge` :
A smash hit.
The film has been discussed by me in detail in my site www.filmlocha.com .
Its about a typical Girlish dream - “koi undekha- unjana”(someone unkonwn, unseen)…will come someday and sweep her off the floor !!
Also “Mere khawabo main jo aaye`” (the one who comes in my dreams) - a superhit song among the Indian teenage girls (would have been mine as well I guess ..had I been in my teens when this movie was released …anyways).
So this girl’s background is as follows :
1. daughter of an NRI - strict Businessman father settled in London - strict means VERY strict - not letting his daughter go to parties or even mix with boys her age.
2. She spends time with her mother & sister - day-dreaming about lover boy and also she is very studious (academically a good performer)
3.About the hero : son od a rich - very rich business man - failure - poor in studies - spends time in boozing and partying with friends - exactly the opposite as that of the girl’s !
3. They happen to meet while holidaying…since it was the first time she had found independence - she fell in love with the very first man who showed her some interest !
4. Thats it - she loves him dearly and he also finds a typical Indian wife material in her - not going to parties - thus he could continue enjoying parties …alone and she will take care of his children - as its a Mother’s job to teach the children - help with the homework etc.
5. After much ruckus - her father accepts the hero as his son-in-law and they get married !!
6. Her father’s choice was even more atrocious so the common mass wished that she better be in the “fire pan ..than in the fire !
