I just saw this vodcast (video podcast) of greenpeace on iTunes which mentioned that roughly 10% of surface area in the Arctic pole is being lost every decade to global warming. The news hit headlines on google news and reiterates that if nothing is done to reverse global warming, the polar bears may be extinct within 45 years!

Apparently, this is the first case of a mammalian species facing a potential wipe out due to direct effects of global warming. Already, there is a high incidence of polar bear deaths due to drowning in the arctic regions and ecologist rescue teams are busy trying to find ways to prevent it. The average polar bear could swim upto 15 miles but the ice caps are found to be retreating as far as 200 miles in some regions, thereby endangering the lives of these white-furred creatures that were once also hunted for their expensive fur atleast until a landmark treaty between the five polar bear ‘bearing’ nations prohibited this.

The podcast urges to drive less and spread the word about global warming and I thought it is a just cause that needs more people like you & me donating our voices to it.

Now a lot of you must have seen Microsoft launch its live local service that lets you obtain images of most locations in the united states. I definitely liked the ideas like bird’s eye view and scratch pad that they came up with. Chandu Thota has written some more details about this service on his blog but there was a lack of information in the launch that caught my attention!

I tried getting bird’s eye view of some locations in and around mountain view…service did not work for me … now I know that microsoft is trying to get more than just a bird’s eye view of the mountain view folks these days!! struck me as quite an Irony that their new maps service did not offer them in my first attempt though

After a few minutes, it was back to normal again and I could see some good 40 degree views of the san francisco downtown! I like this service!
