My Skiing Experience
March 3rd, 2006 by Archana
It was saturday morning feb 18th, I got up early morning .. can you believe i got up at 5:30
n got ready .. That morning was so refreshing, the sunrise, the horses grazing, the fog.. after driving half way , I realised that I forgot my jacket.
Drove back to home. We were supposed to start by 6:30, guess what? there was traffic at 7:00 and that too on a saturday morning. Where are all these people going?? May be they too were heading towards Reno. The 580 route was busy, I was the navigator and I forgot to tell uday that we had to take the 680 route to Sacramento and that we missed the exit. This time I could see the anger on his face.
As we were driving.. the density of the fog increased. The drive on 680 route was awesome and it was new. Questions were rising .. ‘ are we on the right track? ‘I answered back confidently ‘yes this is the route.. havta drive 20 miles on this route n then we’ll see boards for sacramento/reno. ‘
Thank God I was right ~phew~ . We reached Sacramento & had to make a quick stop to eat something. Since we were running out of time, i had to pump up the accelarator, thought we’d reach reno in an hour so that we can be at the ski resort for the 10′o clock class. But that went all in vain when we entered Nevada .. we were stuck in the traffic for 4 hrs.. The traffic finally got cleared & i saw people were putting up the chains to their car tires.. still it didn’t struck me - why chains?? My aim was just to reach reno atleast by 1:30 . I couldn’t drive anymore (was tired waiting in the traffic)
With much dejection whether we gonna make it the ski class or not , we reached reno .. checked in the hotel. We immediately left to Mt. Rose reached there at 2:30 .. we were excited & a bit tensed too. Got the equipments & as we got out.. the colour of my face changed.. All i kept sayin was ‘ Uday I’m not coming.. I wanna go back’ But then, there were many people who didn’t know how to ski. With confidence I put on my skis only to realise that I was standing on a small slope.. gosh! I didn’t know how to stop. I was shouting all the way ..how do I stop? I caught uday’s jacket and fell . He couldn’t stop laughing.
Day 1 ..was all about how to wear your skis , different techniques to stop , the standing posture while you are skiing, how to get on and off the lift , how to move left n right. It was fun..I started to enjoy it more n more ‘coz now I know how to stop ..the best way to stop is to fall on the side instead on ur back. Fell a couple of times.. should appriciate the tutor’s patience. It was 5′o clock we had to pack up. I started to cry.. no not ‘coz the session was over but my fingers were all ice cold, pale and they were paining. We met our friends that night for dinner at the Casino Circus Circus ..thats one the big casino/ hotel in downtown Reno. Came back to hotel at 11:30 and crashed immediately.
Day 2 .. This time we started early. We were surprised to see the traffic heading to Mt. Rose at 8:30 a.m. The registration line was too long. It took 20 mins for our turn to come. As usual got all the equipments ready . This time there were 7 people in our group for the learning class. The tutor was teaching the same stuff.. but the techniques he taught was totally different. I didn’t fall at the learner’s slope
I was skiing without any fear.. looking straight..moving left and right.. ofcourse i fell twice on the Beginner’s slope. The session was over, but we wanted to go ski without the tutor.. so we went up again .. but this time instead of taking the Beginner’s route we took a different route… the Blue route is a bit tough slope.. its called the pandora slope. the slope was a bit steep. I was looking for uday.. damn! he was already down there waiting for me. Man! he went so fast. Anyways, the best part was I didn’t fall.. not even once! on the big slope. That was a big achievement for me ![]()
There are different routes… once you go up.. look for the signs
the green colour means easy
the blue colour means little tough
the black colour means most toughest.. only for experts.

Here’s my tips/suggestions :
If you are planning on to visit reno for the weekend.. i suggest that you start your journey on friday afternoon itself.
Abt Mt. Rose : It the largest ski resort. They have different packages
For First timers:
Skiing - its $49.00. That includes Free ski rentals, poles, shoes and a 2 hr teaching session.
Snowboarding : its $49.00 . includes free snowboard rentals , shoes and 2 hr teaching session.
If you are planning to visit next time then don’t forget to take the 50% off cupons after you return the equipments at the registration counter.
For hotel stay in downtown Reno, you can stay in either Days Inn or Holiday Inn. Both of them are close to the Casino and also close to the freeway.
Directions from the hotel to Mt. Rose : The drive is only 25-30 mins from Reno.
If you are driving :
From the hotel , take the 80 E freeway to Elko. The immediate exit board is US-395 to Carson city/S Lake Tahoe, take that exit.
After 10 mins you’ll see boards for SR-431. Take the exit to Mt. Rose/ To Lake Tahoe (don’t get confused with another exit to Carson city/S Lake Tahoe) and drive all the way up till you see the boards for Mt. Rose ski resort - for rentals go straight.
They even have shuttles.. for that you have to make reservations.
You can visit their official website : here :
